Frequently asked questions

What do I need to use Lumy?

A Mac with macOS 15 Sequoia or later. Lumy runs natively on both Apple silicon and Intel Macs.

How do I start?

Choose File › Open folder… (⌘O) or drag a folder into the window. Your photos appear right away: there is nothing to import and no copies are made.

Which files can Lumy open?

JPEG, HEIC, PNG, TIFF and the camera RAW formats supported by macOS, such as NEF, CR3, ARW, RAF and DNG. RAW support comes from macOS itself, and Apple adds new cameras with system updates. If a RAW file from your camera doesn’t open, keep macOS up to date and write to us with the camera model.

Does Lumy change my original files?

No, never. Ratings, labels and edits are stored in Lumy’s catalog and, if you want, in XMP files next to the photos. Edited photos become new files only when you export them.

Can Lightroom, Bridge or Capture One see my ratings?

Yes. With Settings › Save ratings to XMP files turned on (it is on by default), stars, colour labels and pick/reject flags are also written to an .xmp file next to each photo, which Lightroom, Bridge, Capture One and Photo Mechanic can read.

How do I export my photos?

Select the photos and choose File › Export… (⇧⌘E). You can pick JPEG, HEIC, TIFF or PNG, the size, resolution, colour profile, metadata and a watermark. Existing files are never overwritten.

Where are my ratings and edits stored?

On your Mac only, in Lumy’s catalog inside its container (~/Library/Containers/com.vincenzogallina.lumy). Lumy doesn’t connect to the internet, so nothing leaves your Mac. See the privacy policy.

I removed a folder from the sidebar. Did I lose my work?

No. Removing a folder only stops Lumy from accessing it. Open the same folder again and its ratings and edits come back.

Which languages does Lumy speak?

Italian, English and 49 more languages. If a translation isn’t right, open Settings › Help me translate: it prepares an email with your corrections and screenshots, which you can check before sending.

How do I get a refund?

Purchases are handled by Apple. You can request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com.
